Kent is 'mystery town' on Boston television program

KENT — Boston’s Channel 5, also known as The Boston Channel, recently featured Kent and its natural beauty and unique attractions, as part of a series called Mystery Main Streets and Back Roads on a show called Chronicle HD.

The station aired four segments about the town. The first three just hinted at the town’s name and location. Viewers were invited to guess what town was being featured. “Clues†that were given included Kent’s proximity to the Appalachian Trail, its three private schools — and its recent selection  by Yankee Magazine as the top foliage town in New England.

In fact, Kent’s position at number one in Yankee’s listing was what sparked Channel 5’s interest.

Photographer Randy O’Rourke is one of the local personalities featured on the program. His photos were included in the Yankee article this fall, and he was photographed for the television show while photographing nature in and around town (for samples of his work, see this week’s sports, Pages A10 and A11.)

O’Rourke believes that Kent deserves every bit of its new fame.

“Kent is a multi-faceted town,†he said.

In addition to its natural beauty, the town’s attractions include its rich Colonial history and a variety of contemporary art galleries, restaurants and other businesses.

Kent residents will recognize many of their favorite people, locations andshops in the television show. The Morrison Gallery, the Fife ’n Drum and Belgique Chocolatier are only a few of those that were highlighted.

The four segments of the program can be found by running a search online at  thebostonchannel.com.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.
