Library promotes its programming at Pop-Up Artisan Market

PINE PLAINS — In celebration of its 220th anniversary, the Pine Plains Free Library has organized a series of fundraising events for the community, starting with the Pop-Up Artisan Market on Saturday, June 30.

“We’d like to raise $15,000 over this year to increase our programming,” said Diana Woolis, president of the Pine Plains Free Library Board of Directors.

With the fundraising events set to run through the month of December, she said, “We’re very excited and we’re hoping this expands people’s awareness of the library... and to remind people that libraries are not just about books, but also about community.”

The Pop-Up Artisan Market was held at The Old Library, located at 7086 South Main Street in Pine Plains. Walking through the building’s doors, community members were invited to browse the handcrafted merchandise and get acquainted with the artists.

In addition to selling her ceramic pieces, Lauren Hollick brightened community members’ faces at her face painting booth. In one room, Niharika “Nicky” Vialpando sold Terracotta pots with henna designs and decorated visitors’ hands with exotic henna tattoo designs at her Henna By Nicky booth. While Alsyon Handelman from Alyson’s Mandalas exhibited her intricate mandala designs, Stephanie Caul and Sable Rost set up a Young Living Essential Oils booth that offered bottles of fragrant essential oils.

Along with giving a demonstration of wool spinning, Mickey O’Neill represented the Hudson Valley Sheep & Wool Company by displaying handmade pillows, rugs, carpets and hand crocheted butterflies for sale. Proudly displaying her own small business with the wine company One Hope Wine, Shannon Rego offered wine samples while Milly Morabito showcased merchandise from The Enchanted Fairy – Handcrafted soaps & gifts.

In addition to the local arts and craft vendors in the market, the community was invited to join in a musical jam session at the Gazebo Music Jam. From 1 to 3 p.m., local musicians performed at the gazebo on the corner of South Main Street and Church Street.

Community members can aid the library in its fundraising efforts by donating online at the Pine Plains Free Library’s website at www.pineplainslibrary.org or send a check to the Pine Plains Free Library at PO Box 325, 7775 South Main Street, Pine Plains, NY, 12567.
