Local daycare raising money for March for Babies

AMENIA — My Little Angels Daycare is preparing for a big May fundraiser, as nearly a dozen walkers will participate in this year’s March for Babies benefit in Hyde Park on May 1 as part of the local business’ team. Daycare owner Denise Clair said she was approached by one of her Angels’ mothers, Amanda Moore, who has participated in the walk before.Millions of people participate in the walkathon every year at more than 1,000 separate events across the country, according to the March of Dimes’ website, the charitable organization that raises money to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature births and infant mortality.Clair said that team T-shirts will be printed with “My Little Angels” on them for participants. There will be at least 10 walkers, and the funds are continuing to roll in. An early goal of $500 has already been reached, and the group will hold a bake sale at Freshtown in Amenia on Saturday, April 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to get the word out.“What better cause?” Clair said. “Rain or shine, we’re looking forward to getting out there and trying to raise some money.”Anybody looking for more information or to donate may go to the team’s website, within the March For Babies website, at www.marchforbabies.org, where donations can be made. NORTH CANAAN — Steve Blass Little League AAA baseball opened the 2024 season on Saturday, April 27, with an afternoon match between the Giants and Red Sox.

The Giants stood tall and came out on top with a 15-7 win over their Region One counterparts, the Red Sox. Steve Blass AAA teams are composed of players aged 9 to 11 from Cornwall, Kent, Falls Village, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury and Sharon.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
