Lucy Iacino

WINSTED — Lucy (Romano) Iacino, 97, of Winsted, beloved wife of the late John Iacino, died March 4, 2010, with her loving family by her side.

Born Jan. 4, 1913, to Maria (LaMagna) and Joseph Romano in their home above her father’s shoemaker’s shop on Main Street, she was a lifelong resident of Winsted and retired from Son Chief Electronics. She was known to many as “Auntie Lucy,†“Grandma†and the “Cake Lady.â€

Mrs. Iacino was a self-taught baker and cake decorator, having made thousands of wedding cakes for family and friends for more than 60 years. She also held a license in real estate. She was a charter member of the Italian American Women’s Club, member of the Daughters of Isabella and a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Winsted. She was the matriarch of her family. She will be remembered for her generosity and love of people, whom she welcomed into her home for homemade wine, bread and pizza. She attributed her longevity to garlic and wine.

Lucy will be missed by her son, John Iacino and his wife, Anne, of Winsted; her son-in-law, George Skinner of Newington; her brother and sister-in-law, Tony Romano and Ginny of Winsted; her sister and brother-in-law, Mary DeAnzeris and Attilio of Torrington; and her grandchildren, Wesley Skinner of Andover, Mass., David Skinner and his wife, Shauna Molloy, of West Hartford, Julie Valentine of Newington, Maria Deming and her husband, Bob, of New Hartford, John Skinner and his wife, Sandy, of Mansfield, Mass., Marianne Vacca and her husband, Joe, of Canton, Michael Iacino and his wife, Jennifer, of Burrville and David Iacino and his wife, Jennifer, of Barkhamsted; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews and dear friends.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Sally Ann Skinner; her sisters, Ernestine Romano, Serena Mitchell, Jay Romano and Rose Michalek; and her brother, Joe Romano.

Funeral services were held March 8 from Montano-Shea Funeral Home to St. Joseph’s Church. Burial will be held in the spring. Friends may visit an online guestbook at montano-shea.com.

On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead: El Día de los Muertos.

Mexican Day of the Dead takes place the first weekend of November and honors los difuntos (the deceased) with ofrendas (offerings) on an altar featuring photos of loved ones who have passed on. Elements of earth, wind, fire and water are represented with food, papel picada (colorful decorative paper), candles and tequila left for the beloved deceased. The departed are believed to travel from the spirit world and briefly join the living for a night of remembrance and revelry.
