Man injured while crossing Route 44

SALISBURY — A pedestrian was injured Jan. 22 while crossing Route 44 between two sections of the Salisbury School campus. The 23-year-old man is the son of two members of the school’s faculty. He was released from Hartford Hospital on Sunday.

Charles Kelley, 68, of Salisbury was driving a 2004 Honda Odyssey east on Route 44 near the Salisbury School crosswalk. His passenger was his wife, Jane Kellner, 62.  Peter Barron, 41, of Salisbury was driving a 2006 GMC Sierra pickup truck west just before the crosswalk. Pedestrian Edward “Nedâ€ Corkery, 23, entered the crosswalk at about noon. He was struck first by Kelley’s van, then by Barron’s truck. There was minor damage to the van but there were no injuries to the drivers or passenger. Corkery was taken by Salisbury Volunteer Ambulance to Sharon Hospital then flown by LifeStar helicopter to Hartford Hospital. No charges have been filed yet, or are noted as pending. The case remains open.

Salisbury School released a statement this week about the accident. “We are so relieved that the accident didn’t result in any major injuries for Ned. He returned home from Hartford Hospital last night (Jan. 25) and is recovering nicely. The Corkery family and the school community would like to thank our friends and neighbors from the local community who responded so quickly to help, especially the Salisbury Volunteer Ambulance and the state police. We feel very fortunate to have such dedicated and thoughtful people in our midst.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.
