Morsel Munk owners are kids at heart

WINSTED — Morsel Munk is a sports-oriented retail store at 70 South Main St. owned by husband and wife Scott and Brigitte Rouleau. The store has approximately 4,000 square feet of outdoor gear and sporting goods. In 2007, the Rouleaus launched Morsel Munk as an online-only store and subsequently launched a physical store in May 2011. The first location of the store was in the lower level of their present address. In January, Morsel Munk moved to the upstairs showroom, formerly occupied by Redline Power Sports, which more than doubled their square footage.Inside the store the Rouleaus sell a variety of camping and hiking gear, water sports equipment such as stand up paddle boards, wake boards, slalom skis and combo water skis, river tubes, apparel, and lots of fun brain teaser games, puzzles, and unique toys. Morsel Munk is a hands-on, interactive store where you can test your balance on the slack line or balance board, stretch your creativity at the puzzle bar, flash back to your childhood by working on the Doodle Art poster, or shoot your friends with air cannons, marshmallows and foam balls. “At Morsel Munk, our goal is to make people happier when they leave than when they arrive,” Scott said. “We are passionate about helping people retain their childhood, through experiencing the great outdoors, stretching their minds, and having fun.”Both Scott and Brigitte said they are both big kids at heart. As for the name Morsel Munk, Brigitte said the name came from a hike she once took with Scott.“We were hiking Bear Mountain in Salisbury and a chipmunk ran across our path,” Brigitte said. “Without missing a beat, Scott said ‘Look at the Morsel Munk.’ He always swaps components of words out with synonyms and antonyms to create new words. Instead of chocolate ‘chip’, Scott substituted morsel and Morsel Munk was born.” This word game led to the creation of their award-winning brainteaser puzzle book “Morsel Munk Word Stump: A Puzzling New Language.”Other Morsel Munk brand products include T-shirts with messages related to having fun and growing young. “We have lots of fun planned for our apparel line this summer,” Scott said. “In true Morsel Munk style, expect bright, fun colors.”Both Scott and Brigitte said they are dedicated to ensuring that everyone has access to outdoor recreation opportunities, regardless of their location or economic status. At a local level, Morsel Munk hosts as many events as possible, many of which are free to the public. You will often find opportunities for stand up paddle board clinics, hikes of local trails, or perhaps snow in the middle of summer or fall for a ski and snowboard rail jam in partnership with Ski Sundown. Gear rentals are available, offering a try-before-you-buy option.Scott and Brigitte have been Winsted residents for 23 and 18 years, respectively. “Winsted is a great community, with great residents and so much to offer,” Brigitte said.“We can’t imagine a better home, not just for us, but for Morsel Munk,” Scott said.Morsel Munk is located at 70 South Main St. and is open on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Mondays.
