WEBUTUCK — EffectiveMonday, March 11, the Webutuck Central School District began a new safety procedure related to traffic patterns and student drop off/pick up at Webutuck High School (WHS) and Eugene Brooks Intermediate School (EBIS).
According to a letter from Webutuck Superintendent of Schools Ray Castellani to district families, the changes to the traffic patterns were made after concern regarding student drop off/pick up was expressed to the district.
“We recognized that the congestion and intersecting traffic where it was originally was becoming a safety hazard to all,” Castellani said.
Among the changes, the student drop off/pick up area is now located in the upper parking lot across from the tennis courts. Students may no longer be dropped off or picked up in the back of the WHS/EBIS building. For safety reasons, they have been advised to exit and enter vehicles from the passenger side.
At the drop off area only, the first five vehicles will be allowed to unload students; once they unload, they will exit to allow the next five vehicles to pull up and unload. The speed limit has been set at 10 mph and is being enforced by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.
This summer, the district will paint arrows and center lines and establish signage to create more visuals for drivers. Until then, cones and staff members will remind drivers of the new pattern.
Castellani has been happy to report the efficiency of the new route. A copy of his letter to Webutuck families can be found online at www.webutuckschools.org. A map of the new pattern has been attached to the letter to give families a clear visual of the pattern.
