Railroad Days is on track

NORTH CANAAN — The North Canaan Railroad Days will be held from July 8 to 17. There will be entertainment, food, tag sales and games sponsored by North Canaan businesses. Some of the events are highlighted below. The Commerford’s Carnival at Lawrence Field will be from July 8 to 10. There will be carnival rides, games, a petting zoo and elephant and camel rides. Food will be sold by Kristen Marie’s and the Northwest Detachment Marine Corps League to benefit its scholarship fund.The Canaan Fire Company will sponsor bingo at the Lawrence Field Pavilion July 13 to 15 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. St. Joseph Church’s annual tag sale will be held Friday, July 15, from 9 to 3 p.m. at the Bitterman Center. Later that day, the Connecticut Railroad Historical Association will sponsor a chicken barbecue fundraiser at Canaan Union Station from 5 to 8 p.m. . Adults eat for $12 and children under 5 eat for free. The proceeds will go to the rebuilding of the Canaan Union Station.On Saturday, July 16, at 6 p.m. the Canaan Fire Company will hold its annual fireman’s parade. Boy Scout Troop 22 will sell glow rings at dusk to prepare for the fireworks sponsored by the Canaan Chamber of Commerce and the town of North Canaan.The Canaan Family YMCA is sponsoring the Canaan 5-Mile Road Race on July 17. The race will begin at Lawrence Field Pavilion at 9 a.m. . There is a 5-mile run/walk as well as 2- and 1-mile options. School spirit on the rise at Housy

Students dressed in neon lined the soccer field for senior night under the lights on Thursday, Oct. 16. The game against Lakeview was the last in a series of competitions Thursday night in celebration of Homecoming 2025.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.

As the chilly breeze settles in, Halloween approaches and the community yearns for spooky festivities — HVRHS has answered that calling. An event held annually for the past eight years, the HVRHS haunted house has returned.

The event is organized by the current senior and junior year classes — 2026 and 2027 respectively — and held to raise money that goes toward the junior and senior class’s activities such as senior week, prom, the senior class trip, and more.
