Pine Plains field hockey ties 2-2 with Onteora

PINE PLAINS — Despite dark clouds overhead, players on the Pine Plains varsity field hockey team kept their eyes on the goal as they competed against Onteora on Wednesday, Oct. 2.

The home game weathered a prediction of rain that might have otherwise warded off spectators. Pine Plains athlete Jackie Povall was commended for scoring her team’s first goal with an assist by Penelope Paldino, only for Sarah Jones to follow up with a goal for Onteora.

As the Pine Plains goalie, Kai Mannino made three saves while Onteora goalie Alana Wood made 10 saves. During the second half of the game, Bella Torre scored a goal for Pine Plains. With seven minutes left, Corey Chun tied the score with a goal for Onteora.

In total, Pine Plains scored four corners (referring to a penalty given against a defending team) and 12 shots on goal while Onteora scored six corners and five shots. With a final score of 2-2 after the 10-minute overtime, the game ended with a tie.

On Friday, Oct. 4, Pine Plains competed against Red Hook in a home game.

Once again, Povall scored the first goal for Pine Plains with an assist by Paldino. Sadie Norman scored the team’s second goal with an assist by Ashlee Conley just seven minutes into the game’s second half. Mannino made three saves for Pine Plains and earned the team a shutout, a term that refers to when a goalie prevents the opposing team from scoring during the entire game. Meanwhile, Phoenix Mercier made six saves for Red Hook.

Overall, Pine Plains made eight corners and 10 shots on goal while Red Hook had 11 corners and three shots on goal. Red Hook was defeated by Pine Plains, 0-2.

“I am very happy with the way we played today,” said Pine Plains coach Debbie Beam. “We were aggressive and passed well to each other. We tweaked a few things from last time we played them when we battled them to a non-conference tie.”
