Pink's NFL Picks October 9, 2009

Last Week: 11-3; for the season, 41-21

Pick of the Week: 1-0; for the season, 4-0

As Chet Atkins might say, that was some pretty good pickin’!  It was a solid week and my Lock of the Week came in, so I hope most everyone is happy. I must admit, every time I think the Pats are ripe for the plucking, Brady and the boys come up with a big performance. As for the Titans, they remain a mystery on both sides of the ball.

Every week there are some great matchups, and this week is no different. I may surprise you with my Pick of the Week, but I think it’s a lock. Here we go, and good luck!

Sunday, Oct. 11

Cincinnati at Baltimore — It’s time to give some credit to the Bengals. This team lost a heartbreaker in their first game of the season and many fans thought they would fold up and go away. Not the case: They go into Baltimore tied with the Ravens for first place in their division. Unfortunately, they run into a real tough team on the road and that spells trouble. I like the Ravens, 42-21.

Cleveland at Buffalo — The Browns showed some positive signs against the Bengals, while the Bills put up a stinker in Miami. What that means, I’m not quite sure. I’ll stick with the Bills, 19-17.

Washington at Carolina — Watching the Redskins offense is equivalent to watching paint dry. For that matter, so is watching Carolina’s. Neither team is going anywhere, so just go ahead with the home team.  I’ll take Carolina to pick up their first win of the year, 17-7.

Pittsburgh at Detroit — The Lions actually got off to a good start against the Bears but couldn’t maintain it.  As for the Steelers, they rediscovered their running game and Big Ben was outstanding again.  I’ll take the Steelers, but it won’t be as easy as some think.  Pittsburgh wins, 30-23.

Dallas at Kansas City — Tony Romo and the Cowboys need a week off and playing the Chiefs is the next best thing. Dallas must get their running game going if they hope to get to the post season. As for the Chiefs, they might consider trading for Zack Greinke of the crosstown KC Royals.  Dallas will prevail, 23-13.

Oakland at N.Y. Giants — The same scenario as last week: You can’t win in the NFL without good QB. Oakland has the worst in the league.  Giants win with ease, 24-10.

Tampa Bay at Philadelphia — Tampa Bay is just short of horrible, while the Eagles should be primed coming off their bye week.  McNabb should be back at QB for the Eagles, but regardless of who plays QB, the Eagles win this one, 27-7.

Minnesota at St. Louis — The Vikings are rolling along quite nicely, while the Rams are fighting for survival. St. Louis fans can only hope that the Vikes are a bit tired after Monday night’s game and therefore don’t beat up on the Rams too bad. Don’t bet on it: Minnesota continues to roll, 27-10.

Atlanta at San Francisco — This is by far one of the best games on the board. The Falcons are coming of their bye week, while the 49ers are on a roll.  It seems to me that this game will come down to defense, and that’s why I like the 49ers. I’ll stick with San Francisco, 21-17. (I like both teams.)

Houston at Arizona — This is a big game for both teams. Houston needs to find some consistency, while the Cards need to get their high-powered offense into gear. This is my Pick of the Week, and I’m going with the Texans to upset the Cards on the road, 31-27.

New England at Denver — You have to like the Broncos’ defense and the way the shut down Tony Romo and the Cowboys. However, this is Tom Brady and the Patriots, and I don’t think the Broncos can do it two weeks in a row. It will be a tough game but the Patriots win, 24-19.

Jacksonville at Seattle — The Jags were left for dead two weeks ago but they appear to have gotten their act together. Seattle will always be tough at home but need Matt Hasselbeck to be healthy.  Regardless, I think the Seahawks find a way to score just enough to win, 20-17.

Indianapolis at Tennessee — The Colts are hot and the Titans are not.  Look for Tennessee to put up a gallant effort, but Peyton Manning will not let his Colts lose this one.  I like Indianapolis, 24-20.

Monday, Oct. 12

N.Y. Jets at Miami — This is a key game for the Dolphins if they hope to get back into their division race. As for the Jets, rookie QB Sanchez finally laid an egg and that was to be expected.  I liked what I saw in Dolphin backup Chad Henne at QB and with that said, I like Miami to win, 23-20.

The artist called ransome

‘Migration Collage' by ransome

Alexander Wilburn

If you claim a single sobriquet as your artistic moniker, you’re already in a club with some big names, from Zendaya to Beyoncé to the mysterious Banksy. At Geary, the contemporary art gallery in Millerton founded by New Yorkers Jack Geary and Dolly Bross Geary, a new installation and painting exhibition titled “The Bitter and the Sweet” showcases the work of the artist known only as ransome — all lowercase, like the nom de plume of the late Black American social critic bell hooks.

Currently based in Rhinebeck, N.Y., ransome’s work looks farther South and farther back — to The Great Migration, when Jim Crow laws, racial segregation, and the public violence of lynching paved the way for over six million Black Americans to seek haven in northern cities, particularly New York urban areas, like Brooklyn and Baltimore. The Great Migration took place from the turn of the 20th century up through the 1970s, and ransome’s own life is a reflection of the final wave — born in North Carolina, he found a new home in his youth in New Jersey.
