P&Z discusses town planning

KENT — The Planning & Zoning Commission (P&Z) is holding a series of special meetings to review and make final changes to a proposed Town Plan of Conservation and Development.The state requires all towns to update their town plan every 10 years. It is supposed to reflect the vision of town residents of how they want their town to look in the coming decade, and it forms the basis for the town’s planning and zoning regulations.At a special P&Z meeting on Oct. 20, commission members discussed what they felt were the three main objectives of the proposed plan: maintaining the natural rural character of Kent; community development; and community assets.One of the topics discussed was whether to include a section on “What makes Kent special?” as an integral part of the plan.There was also discussion about whether to include a planning overview in the proposed document contrasting “New England Kent,” “rural Kent” and “modern Kent.” One commission member said, “The typical New England village is an iconic American image.”Another special P&Z meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 27, at Town Hall at 5:30 p.m.
