Race raises $4,000 for camp tuition fund

COLEBROOK — Camp Jewell held its fourth annual 5K race on Saturday, June 14. Approximately 175 racers took part in the 3.1-mile race.

Assistant camp director Jodi Gove said that the funds raised are applied to Northwest YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign.

The program helps families pay for camp tuition when their children would otherwise be financially unable to attend.

“Camp Jewell is a place where kids can come to be themselves, try new things, be outdoors and get away from electronics,” Gove said. “It’s a great place for kids to have fun in a safe environment. This event is a great opportunity for folks to meet Camp Jewell staff. We have some fun open activities after the race as well.”

Camp Jewell board member Tom Eng said the event got its start four years ago as an idea at a board meeting for how to raise money for the Strong Kids, and has been growing every year since.

“It’s a way for everyone to get together for some outdoor activity and help raise money at the same time,” Eng said. “This is our best turnout yet. I hope it keeps on growing every year.”

She said the amount raised by the race was $4,000.

Hartford resident Kristin Comeforo said she learned of the race from a running website. “This is my first time running in this race and I don’t know anyone here but decided to come out and make some new friends,” Comeforo said.

Participant Bill Gaffin is 84 years old and has taken part in the race all four years.

“I’ve been a volunteer with the camp for 35 years,” Gaffin said, “Everybody loves everybody at Camp Jewell. It’s the greatest place in the world.”

Gaffin’s wife Nancy attended but did not take part in the race.

“Today is our 62nd wedding anniversary and I can’t think of a better way to spend it,” she said. “The best thing about this camp is the kids never fight. They have fun together. They make friends and it’s like they’ve known each other forever. It’s amazing.”

The top five finishers of the race were Gavin Woodward with a time of 19:55, Michael McGuire with a time of 20:58, Jeff Lipchus with a time of 21:07, Jeffrey Schumacher with a time of 21:12 and Tyler Schumacher with a time of 21:27.
