Remembering the good times at annual Sharon Hospital alumni picnic

The Sharon Hospital alumni picnic was held at the Grove in Lakeville on Friday, Sept. 21.

The BYOBrown Bag meal was held indoors this year, due to the cool weather. Despite the chill, the group optimistically decided that the picnic will now always be held on the third Friday of September. In 2019, it will be on Sept. 20; anyone who is not on the mailing list and would like to be can contact co-organizer Jack Hawley at hawleykh54@gmail.com.

Attending were hospital staff including doctors, nurses, administrators and other workers.

Notable absences included the late Milly Rick; former co-organizers Cele Cummings and Peg Brusie, who are both over 90 years old and were ailing on the day of the picnic; and Marion Chatfield, who is also over 90.

Mildred Rick was remembered. A former nurse at the hospital, she had been promoted to head of housekeeping, a job she held for 20 years. She died this year in May at the age of 98.

Doctor Malcolm Brown was not able to attend (his daughter was visiting from out of town). The doctors who were able to come were John Gallup, Richard Collins and Peter Reyelt.

Chatfield would have been awarded the Eldest Retiree award this year (a potted plant) but in her absence it went to Howard Lotz, who is 91.

When longtime arts administrator Amy Wynn became the first executive director of the American Mural Project (AMP) in 2018, the nonprofit was part visionary art endeavor, part construction site and part experiment in collaboration.

Today, AMP stands as a fully realized arts destination, home to the world’s largest indoor collaborative artwork and a thriving hub for community engagement. Wynn’s departure, marked by her final day Oct. 31, closes a significant chapter in the organization’s evolution. Staff and supporters gathered the afternoon before to celebrate her tenure with stories, laughter and warm tributes.
