Samuel Gorkofsky

SHARON — Samuel Gorkofsky, 92, of Amenia Road, died unexpectedly on July 18, 2017, at his home. He was the loving husband of Estelle (Gurfein) Gorkofsky.

He was buried at King David Memorial Gardens in Putnam Valley, N.Y., on July 20, 2017.

Sam was born Nov. 23, 1924, in Sharon, the son of the late Bertha (Paley)  and Louis Gorkofsky.

Raised in Ellsworth, Sam attended a one-room schoolhouse  before attending Sharon Center School and then Housatonic Valley Regional High School, as a member of its first graduating class. Sam and his father, Louis, bought Long Meadow Farm in Sharon, where Sam would operate the farm as a dairy farm.

Sam married his wife of almost 59 years, Estelle, in October 1958.

Soon thereafter they welcomed into the world a daughter, Terri, and son, Kevin.

With the help of Estelle, Sam was able to build a successful dairy farm that held more than 180 head of cattle.

In 1997 Estelle had a major stroke, leaving her in need of full-time care, and for the last 20 years of his life Sam provided that care, helping her take every step.

When Sam died last Tuesday, he died in the house that he built and so loved, on the farm and land that he so loved, and in the town of Sharon that he so loved.

As much as Sam loved his farm life, his true joy and pride came from his family. Sam is lovingly survived by his wife, Estelle; his daughter, Terri Kravitz and her husband, Steve, of New York, N.Y.; his son, Kevin, and his wife, Judy, of Simsbury, Conn.; six grandchildren, Joshua and Adam Kravitz and Andrea, Victoria, Luke and Sara Gorkofsky; as well as his nieces and nephews, Marvin, Carol, Joyce and Jeffrey.

He was predeceased by his sisters Dora Wolman and Lily Schnur.

Memorial contributions in Sam’s memory may be made to the Sharon Fire Department and Ambulance Squad, P.O. Box 357, Sharon, CT 06069 or to Congregation Beth David, P.O. Box 125, 3344 East Main St., Amenia, NY 12501.

Arrangements are under the care of the Kenny Funeral Home.

When the guide gets it wrong

Rosa setigera is a native climbing rose whose simple flowers allow bees to easily collect pollen.

Dee Salomon

After moving to West Cornwall in 2012, we were given a thoughtful housewarming gift: the 1997 edition of “Dirr’s Hardy Trees and Shrubs.” We were told the encyclopedic volume was the definitive gardener’s reference guide — a fact I already knew, having purchased one several months earlier at the recommendation of a gardener I admire.

At the time, we were in the thick of winter invasive removal, and I enjoyed reading and dreaming about the trees and shrubs I could plant to fill in the bare spots where the bittersweet, barberry, multiflora rose and other invasive plants had been.Years later, I purchased the 2011 edition, updated and inclusive of plants for warm climates.
