School district sets tax levy

PINE PLAINS — The Pine Plains Board of Education has set the tax levy for its 2007 budget at $15,472,319.

This year’s tax levy is a 9.56-percent increase from last year’s tax levy of $14,122,044.

The total school budget this year is $24,540,400, a 5.58-percent increase from last year’s school budget of $23,248,256.

“The rates all vary by equalization rates, Goldbeck said. “The rates are also set by each town’s tax assessor and the state.

School board president Helene McQuade said this year’s school budget uses tax dollars efficiently.

“The budget itself includes no new programs, it just maintains the programs that are already in place, McQuade said. “I know that [the board] along with the administration did a very conscious job of making sure our budget is responsible. It has what it needs to provide the students with sound programs, and at the same time uses tax dollars efficiently.

This year’s budget passed in May on its first try, with a vote of 372 for and 283 against, an 89 vote margin.
