Selectmen approve funding for public restroom

KENT — The Board of Selectmen has allocated $1,100 in the 2010-11 budget to reimburse Jim Preston, who owns and maintains the public restrooms in the Village Barns shopping center on the corner of Main Street and Maple Street.

Preston, who also owns and maintains several buildings in the shopping center, opened the restrooms several years ago.

According to First Selectman Bruce Adams (who spoke about the restrooms at the selectman’s meeting on Tuesday, March 2), the town’s Chamber of Commerce has wrestled for years with the idea of repaying Preston for his costs.

“Preston would like some sort of financial reimbursement for the maintenance and operation of the restrooms, Adams said. “The chamber has allocated $1,100 and we have placed in our budget an equal amount. This money will also help to keep the restrooms open during the weekends.

While Preston was not present during the meeting, Adams said he spoke to him and said Preston was grateful to both the chamber and the town.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.
