A sense of community

AMENIA — Fun was had by all during Saturday morning’s Community Day at Amenia Elementary School.

Goods were sold from a variety of tables and children took part in various games, including "candy in the haystack," where children rummaged through a bale of hay for pieces of candy.

Various classes from the school district used the event as a fundraiser for their numerous field trips.

Members of the eighth-grade Webutuck High School class stood in front of the school, waving and yelling at drivers to stop by. They were raising money for their field trip in May to Washington, D.C.

Parent Charity Brady ran a vendors’ table to raise money for the sixth-grade’s field trip to Medieval Times in Lyndhurst, N.J.

"We’re doing very well. We are raising tons of money for our field trip," Brady said. "We have a lot of fundraisers, and we’re doing very well here today. We are getting a lot of support from the community."

Dustin Smith, a senior from Webutuck High School, was raising money for the Spanish-German Club’s field trip by selling waffles.

"I’m not sure how much we’ve raised, but we’re doing very well," Smith said. "I didn’t think we would have such a big turnout because it’s being held in Amenia instead of at the Webutuck schools. But we are having a great turnout today."

The class of 2011 was selling cookies and pies to raise money for its junior prom.

"We sold a lot of cookies, but no one wants to buy any pies," Kayla Brady said. "I do think it’s going good today because there are a lot of people here."

Carol Tridble sold Webutuck Warriors shirts to benefit the district’s Booster Club.

"You have to have some school spirit, something that people will support and get behind," Tridble said. "Whether it’s academics or sports, it’s important to support it."

Debbie Pelkey drove over to the fair because her 2-year-old son, Dylan, saw the inflatable snake attraction in front of the school.

"I’m glad we’re here, because he saw this from the road and he said he wanted to go on the big snake," Pelkey said. "He loved it, but he seems to be scared of it."

Community Day is an annual event in the school district. This year it ran from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a good turnout from the community.
