Sharon Playhouse Sets New Schedule

Quickly moving to reinvigorate Sharon Playhouse after last summer’s disappointing season, the new production team of Robert Levinstein and Alan M-L Wager have plans to make the theater a year round entertainment venue.

They will launch a continuing series of monthly “Cocktails and Cabaret” on Jan. 13, with a 5 to 7 p.m. show in the Bok Gallery of the playhouse. Guest headliners Kirby and Bev Ward will use “The Great American Songbook” as their inspiration for a late afternoon of singing and dancing.

The Wards have appeared frequently in Broadway and London shows, with pops and symphony orchestras, even before First Ladies in D.C. Their mix of music and dance has earned awards on both sides of the Atlantic.

The new series will offer a variety of live performances, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Tickets will cost $50 each and can be purchased at www.sharonplayhouse.org.

Also just before the holidays Levinstein and Wager announced their first summer season on the Main Stage. Cole Porter’s seaborne musical, “Anything Goes,” will play from June 15 through July 1.

Then the Sharon Playhouse Youth Theater will present “The Hit Elvis Show” July 13-22.

A straight play, “Barefoot in the Park,” one of Neil Simon’s best, takes over the Main Stage from July 27 through Aug. 12. The summer season ends with “Always … Patsy Cline,” a show Levenstein and Wager have produced previously at Ogunquit Playhouse in Maine and in Los Angeles. The play, based on Cline’s life and including 15 of her songs, runs Aug.17 through Sept. 2.

Throughout the summer the new team promises that the popular Patio Cabarets, which disappeared last season, will return with a new look and a variety of musicians.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

Student initiatives shake up Homecoming
The poster promoting the Homecoming dance boasted the event would feature dancing, games and a bonfire. Reactions to the planned move outside were mixed, with some students excited about the changes and others expressing a desire for tradition.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.
