Silo fire at Destined Wind Farm

AMENIA — The Amenia Fire Company responded to a call last Monday, Jan. 29, of a silo fire at Destined Wind Farm, located at 3562 Route 343, Amenia.

Farm owner Hans Joerg Meili and one of his technicians opened the silo to service its unloading unit when the fire began. Though they managed to subdue the blaze to some extent, Meili said they thought the situation was getting out of hand. That’s when they called the fire department as a precaution.

The Amenia Fire Department responded to the call at 2:37 p.m. with mutual aid from the Wassaic and Sharon, Conn., fire companies. The Millerton Fire Department covered the Amenia firehouse during the duration of the fire and an ambulance from Northern Dutchess Paramedics was on site, though no injuries were reported.

The fire was contained by sealing the silo door, eliminating all oxygen entering the structure. The motor attached to the unloading unit was also moved into the silo in order to seal it.

Altogether, it took more than an hour to extinguish the flames. The adjacent barn did not catch fire and damages to the farm were minimal.

At this time, an exact cause has not been determined. Fire officials said many factors could have contributed to the fire, such as the introduction of air to the silo and the hay silage.

As a result of the blaze, the silo’s unloading unit has to be removed and repaired; as a consequence, it’s uncertain whether the silo will be opened again at the risk of igniting another fire.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.
