Sports writer and part-time resident dies at 91

Once a weekender on Indian Lake Road, sports writer Zander Hollander, 91, of New York died of complications from Alzheimer’s on Friday, April 11.Perhaps best known for his “Complete Handbooks” — baseball, basketball, football, hockey and soccer encyclopedias published yearly in the 1970s to 1990s — he also wrote for the New York World Telegram and Sun. The New York Times ran his obituary along with a feature story at the time of his death.Terni’s Phil Terni and Oblong Books & Music’s Dick Hermans remember the popular sports personality patronizing their stores in the 1980s and 1990s.“He and his wife were pleasant, they came in pretty regularly for a number of years,” Hermans said. “He seemed like a nice gentlemen.”Hermans made enough acquaintance to carry his books at Oblong, though doesn’t recall seeing Hollander for some 15 years since his last visit.Terni added that although the Hollanders kept a low profile when in town, they could be seen more frequently in the summers.Hollander is survived by his wife, Phyllis, daughter Susan Whitman and two grandchildren.
