FALLS VILLAGE — The plants will be just coming out of dormancy when Tom Scott opens his Falls Village Flower Farm on Saturday, March 30. That’s because his plants aren’t imported and falsely bloomed up, as is the case at the big nursery chains. Scott’s specialty is perennials that he has been nurturing with love and professional care for two decades, and dividing in spring for his customers.
Last week he and his staff of Stacey Strid and Toshihiro Wakamatsu were tending to boxes full of burlap wrapped around tender green shoots. There were also small pots of the early spring Northwest Corner favorite, the Hellebore, a plant with sturdy stems and delicate blossoms.
“We grow everything we sell,” Tom said proudly. “And everything we grow is hardy for this area. Plants have a natural growth cycle, and the plants that you buy from us are already acclimated to that cycle. They are very vigorous.”
The Falls Village Flower Farm does not have a store front or greenhouses. They grow all their perennials outdoors “under the stars and sun as nature intended,” Scott says. There are pots and plants, and display gardens around the property (which is at 27 Kellogg Road, just off Route 7 a little north of town).
Scott grows and sells flowering plants as well as shrubs. He and his crew can custom grow specialty perennials at the request of customers.
“What we really specialize in is herbaceous plants,” he said, explaining that these are plants that don’t have a woody structure visible above the ground (unlike the woody perennials, which you can still see even in winter when the leaves are gone).
What Scott and his crew also specialize in is working with clients to get the gardens they want.
“We do installations and we give great customer service,” he said. “We’ve been growing many of these plants for more than 20 years. We know what they need, where to plant them, how to care for them” (although his team does not do garden maintenance).
Scott and his team will be at the Trade Secrets Rare Plant And Garden Antiques Sale at Lion Rock Farm in Sharon on Saturday, May 18 (the sale is a fundraiser for Women’s Support Services).
