Strike at Stop & Shop

NORTH CANAAN — The strike for union workers at Stop & Shop stores across New England (including the location in North Canaan) was still ongoing when this issue went to press on Tuesday, April 16.

The store workers were instructed by their union to walk out at about 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, because parent company Royal Ahold Delhaize would not budge on reductions to worker pay increases that coincided with an increase in workers’ contributions to their health-care premiums; and an increased dependence on automated checkout lanes that don’t require checkout workers.

The store was shut down temporarily on April 11 but was open for business again the following day, although union members remained outside the store discouraging shoppers from entering the building.
