Student singers swing into spring with HVRHS concert

FALLS VILLAGE — Student musicians and singers at Housatonic Valley Regional High School presented a swinging summer concert on Wednesday, May 29, with selections from films, folk music, jazz and more.

In addition to the concert band and concert choir, performances were by the Night Choir, Heartbreakers and Sweethearts and Jazz Band. The groups are under the direction of Thomas Krupa and Alicia Simonetti Shpur; Sandy Kleisner was the evening’s accompanist.

Musical choices included the theme music from the anime film “Spirited Away,” the Disney animated films “The Lion King” and “The Prince of Egypt” and the jazz standard “Bill Bailey, Won’t You Please Come Home?”

The concert choir presented the war poem, “In Flanders Fields,” with music by Christine Donklin.

Classic rock selections included Billy Joel’s “The Longest Time,” with a solo by Marijke Stiffler and “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye,” written by the late Paul Leka, a Sharon resident.

Krupa, who is chairman of the school’s music department, said of this year’s concert that, “I’m very proud of this graduating class. They were instrumental in helping pick the repertoire and achieving it.”
