Studio 343: ‘Hot hair in the hot red chair’

AMENIA — Rebecca Martin and Juliet Chamberlin don’t try to hide how hard they’ve worked to make Studio 343, their new salon on East Main Street, completely fabulous.“You can get hot hair in the hot red chair,” Martin said, referring to the two red barber chairs that draw the eye upon entering the space.The two women have worked together for eight years doing hair.“We’ve been friends for just as long. We’ve worked at other salons and knew we wanted to open one of our own,” Chamberlin said.They spotted the vacant storefront in Amenia and knew it was perfect for them.“Julie called me and said she saw a spot that spoke to her. I told her I was in. I don’t know how serious I was then, but here we are and it’s awesome,” Martin said.They offer services for men, women and children including cuts, foil highlights and waxing.“My grandmother owned a salon in Pine Plains. It runs in our blood,” said Martin.Chamberlin’s mother also attended beauty school.“I guess it really does!” she said.The salon is located at 3324 East Main St., Route 343.It is open Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is closed on Sundays and Mondays.For more information or to make an appointment call 845-789-1550.

KENT — Residents now have access to around-the-clock food-scrap composting thanks to two newly installed organics “smart bins,” unveiled during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday morning, Dec. 1.

Rick Osborne, manager of the Kent Transfer Station, placed the first bag of food scraps into the smart bin located at 3 Railroad St. A second bin has been installed outside the Transfer Station gate, allowing 24/7 public access even when the facility is closed.

Cornwall selectmen prioritize housing, healthcare in new two-year goals

CORNWALL — Housing and healthcare topped the list of 15 goals the Board of Selectmen set for the next two years, reflecting the board’s view that both areas warrant continued attention.

First Selectman Gordon Ridgway and Selectmen Rocco Botto and John Brown outlined their priorities during the board’s regular meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 2. On housing, the board discussed supporting organizations working to create affordable options in town, and Botto said the town should also pursue additional land acquisitions for future housing.
