Superintendent Awards - HVRHS

FALLS VILLAGE — It’s hard to imagine two more involved and energetic students at Housatonic Valley Regional High School than Andrew Sadowski and Stephanie Kearns. Both are recipients of this year’s Region One Litchfield County Superintendent’s Award for the high school.

Andrew is musically inclined. He plays alto sax and throughout his four years at Housatonic, Andrew has been a member of the school band, jazz band and Berkshire Band. He’s also been on the soccer team for his four years at the school. He’s an active member of the academic bowl, the AFS club and the National Honor Society. His favorite subjects are science and foreign languages. His favorite teacher is Mary O’Reilly for Spanish and Don Looney in English.

The son of Charles and Jane Sadowski, Andrew is a graduate of Kent Center School. Jane Sadoswki was the Kent representative to the Region One School Board from 2001 until this May, when she resigned to take a full-time job as a counselor at a residential program in Danbury.

Asked what he likes most about Housatonic, the four-year senior replied, "I like the setting. It’s a beautiful area."

Andrew hopes to attend a four-year college somewhere on the East Coast but has not yet made a choice. A career in science is a possibility.

Stephanie is active at Housatonic and in her community of Cornwall, where she lives with her parents, Heidi and Walter "Skip" Kearns Jr. At Housatonic, she’s been enrolled in a variety of honors and advanced placement courses, including biology, calculus and English. Her favorite subjects include science and pre-engineering, which she took last year. Her favorite teacher is Letitia Garcia-Tripp, whom she has had for four years as cross-country coach.

"I respect her a lot," said Stephanie. "She’s a great person." During those seasons, Stephanie has run up impressive honors, including Berkshire All-Star, All-State and most valuable player at Housatonic. In addition, she was captain of the track and field team last year.

Like Andrew, Stephanie is into music. She’s a section leader and member of the concert band, was a member of the Berkshire Band and the Northern Regional Music Festival. At home, she is a lector at St. Bridget’s, the Catholic church in Cornwall Bridge, and has even taught Sunday school there.

Stephanie hopes to enroll in a five-year undergraduate program in engineering. She’s applying early action to Villanova University in Philadelphia.

As for being a leader, Stephanie has been class president for three years. "I’ve always had that personality," she said. "I’m an older sister."

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.
