Three deaths in five months on Route 341

KENT — In the span of five months, three people have died in one area of Route 341, also known as Segar Mountain Road.

In December, on Christmas Eve, Dennis Cavalleiro was killed in an accident.

On May 1, Mark Fongemie and his wife Linda Fongemie were killed when their motorcycle veered off the road.

In January, an accident occurred in the same location that involved a van from the Marvelwood School and two other vehicles. There were no fatalities from that accident.

At a board meeting May 4, First Selectman Bruce Adams said that, after the fatal May 1 crash, he spoke to a representative from the state Department of Transportation.

“The representative told me that I needed complete accident reports to get anything rolling, Adams said. “I called the state police and their representative told me that their report on the Christmas Eve accident is not yet complete and he could not give it to me. Also, the report for the most recent accident is far from complete and he could not give that to me either.

Adams said a representative from the state police promised that he would give him the reports once they’re done, but did not have a time frame for when that would be.

Selectman George Jacobsen suggested that the reason for the multiple accidents has to do with the pitch of the road;  Adams agreed.

“I’ve been approached by three people who have had accidents there and they all told me the same thing, Adams said. “Someone suggested putting signs on the road, another person suggested putting flashing lights up.

Adams said he would continue to look into the road situation. The selectmen will discuss the subject again at a future meeting.
