Tough football loss to Thames River

FALLS VILLAGE — The Thames River Crusaders and their new offense dominated MCW United 38-0 on Saturday, Sept. 30, at Connecticut Technical Conference action at home at Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

The visitors had been a running a spread offense, heavily reliant on passing, with little success in their first two games. (Both clubs came into the game with 0-2 records.)

The MCW defense held the visitors at bay in Thames River’s first possession.

MCW then went three and out, and the Crusaders capitalized on an errant punt snap to score their first touchdown.

The first pass from the Crusaders came on the successful 2-point conversion.

It was mostly all Thames River after that, with running back Trey Stimson consistently racking up large gains. When they went to the air, quarterback Zachary Jackson was effective, connecting primarily with wide receiver Xavier Wright.

MCW came into the second half with a different offensive look, and for a moment it appeared the momentum had shifted.

But a combination of turnovers and penalties snuffed out MCW’s best efforts.

For the MCW United players, Troy Brazee rushed for 55 yards; Christian Saade had a nifty 25-yard reception from Derek Oakes and 30 yards rushing; Shevaughn Wright made two tackles, one of which saved a touchdown; Alex Vernali and Tommy Perlotto made six tackles each; Jacob Simonds had two tackles; and Nick Guida racked up 15 yards rushing, and made six tackles.

Thames River improved to 1-2; MCW remains winless at 0-3.
