NORTH CANAAN — A runaway truck was the cause of a power outage throughout much of the center of town Monday afternoon, Dec. 6. Lawrence Katz, 49, of Malden, Mass., pulled a 2009 International truck, owned by Sheila Marie Imports LTD, into the Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot on the corner of Route 44 and North Elm Street at about 1:45 p.m. He got out of the truck without setting the parking brake. The truck rolled out of the parking lot and across North Elm Street, where it hit a utility pole. While the truck was undamaged and the pole had only minor damage, the impact blew out a transformer on the pole.
Outages stretched through the town center, including at Stop & Shop, and south on Route 7, knocking out electricity to homes and facilities including the Geer campus and Becton Dickinson.
