75 years ago — March 1936

Reflections of the Season (editorial): Maybe you don’t believe in signs, but under the new motor laws, “stop” signs really mean stop. The signs wouldn’t be there unless they meant it. There is no one in such a hurry that he cannot obey the signs. Most of the hurry is imaginary anyway. The drivers only think they are in a hurry.

High water in the Housatonic River the past few days has caused a beautiful and old familiar sight at Canaan Falls, Amesville. The water which during the year is diverted for use of the Connecticut Power Co. plant again poured over the falls creating a majestic and beautiful spectacle. Hundreds of spectators have visited the scene at Amesville, and many of the younger generation were afforded an opportunity to see the falls as they used to be before the installation of the power company plant.

SALISBURY — Allan Ball returned Monday from Long Island. Allan wishes to state that there is no truth in the rumor that he is married.

SHARON — John Murtaugh spent Monday in Hartford.

50 years ago — March 1961

Word has been received of the death on March 13 of Mrs. Nellie Jagel, former owner of the Lime Rock Motel, in a nursing home in New Jersey. Mrs. Jagel built the motel three years ago.

SALISBURY — Chico Aller is spending his vacation from South Kent School with his grandmother, Mrs. Howard Aller.

School Menus this week at Sharon Center School are: Monday — meat ravioli with sauce, wedge of cheese, buttered green beans, bread and butter, peaches and milk; Tuesday — meat loaf, mashed potatoes, buttered spinach, bread and butter, jello and milk; Wednesday — vegetable or cream of tomato soup, peanut butter or meat and relish sandwiches, brownie and milk; Thursday — Welsh rarebit on crackers, escalloped tomatoes, cabbage salad, bread and jelly, mixed fruit and milk. There will be no school on Good Friday.

25 years ago — March 1986

SALISBURY — Some 100 residents attended the Historic District Commission hearing Friday night to express their opinions of proposed design plans for a new Town Hall.

FALLS VILLAGE — Housatonic Valley Regional High School’s girls soccer team is headed to the semifinals of the state tournament.

The Mountaineers are the highest seeded team of the four schools remaining in the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Class S playoff bracket.
