Accident injures two

AMENIA — Two Pennsylvania men were injured in a motorcycle accident on Thursday, June 9, shortly before 2 p.m.According to the New York State Police, the men, John Tharp and Edward Moran, were traveling with a group of approximately 15 motorcycles on Route 44 when they failed to navigate a sharp curve on DeLavergne Hill. They went off the road and down a steep embankment.“It was a pretty bad accident. We had to fly one person out,” said Amenia Fire Chief Shawn Howard, who also said that the group had been planning the trip for two years.Moran was airlifted to St. Francis Hospital and Tharp was taken to the same hospital by ambulance. Both men suffered various upper-body traumas.As of Monday morning, Tharp had been released from the hospital, but Moran was still receiving care.A third motorcycle, ridden by Steve and Suzann Markham, also slid off the road and down the embankment. Both passengers were treated on the scene and released.

NORTH CANAAN — Steve Blass Little League AAA baseball opened the 2024 season on Saturday, April 27, with an afternoon match between the Giants and Red Sox.

The Giants stood tall and came out on top with a 15-7 win over their Region One counterparts, the Red Sox. Steve Blass AAA teams are composed of players aged 9 to 11 from Cornwall, Kent, Falls Village, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury and Sharon.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
