Alan Luther ‘Al’ Curtis

SHARON — Alan Luther “Al” Curtis, 79, passed away May 10, 2011. Alan was born June 3, 1931, in Bermuda to the late Catherine (Gulick) and Alan Blair Curtis.He was raised in Sharon and spent his professional career in Dover, N.J., where he was also a past master of the Jephthah Lodge. He was in the U.S. Army for two years and then worked as a professional engineer for the U.S. government as a civilian at the Picatinny Arsenal until he retired in 1986. He spent the last 25 happy years in Lenexa, Kan.Al was a member of the Joker Unit of the Abdallah Shrine. His family was responsible for starting Camp Fire Girls of America (now Camp Fire Boys and Girls) and did missionary work in Hawaii, Spain, Japan and Italy as well as other countries. He was a member of Hawaiian Mission Children’s Society. His family ancestry dates back to the American Revolution, the Mayflower Pilgrims and Magna Carta signers. He is survived by his wife, Carol Curtis; his stepchildren, Margaret A. Denny and her husband, Doug Peterson, Raymond H. Denny and Dorothy A. Denny and her husband, Kevin; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.Funeral services were held May 14 from the Park Lawn Funeral Home in Kansas City, Mo. Burial folowed in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Abdallah Shrine for the Children’s Hospital, 5300 Metcalf Ave., Mission, KS 66202.Arrangements are under the care of Park Lawn Funeral Home.
