Alan Luther ‘Al’ Curtis

SHARON — Alan Luther “Al” Curtis, 79, passed away May 10, 2011. Alan was born June 3, 1931, in Bermuda to the late Catherine (Gulick) and Alan Blair Curtis.He was raised in Sharon and spent his professional career in Dover, N.J., where he was also a past master of the Jephthah Lodge. He was in the U.S. Army for two years and then worked as a professional engineer for the U.S. government as a civilian at the Picatinny Arsenal until he retired in 1986. He spent the last 25 happy years in Lenexa, Kan.Al was a member of the Joker Unit of the Abdallah Shrine. His family was responsible for starting Camp Fire Girls of America (now Camp Fire Boys and Girls) and did missionary work in Hawaii, Spain, Japan and Italy as well as other countries. He was a member of Hawaiian Mission Children’s Society. His family ancestry dates back to the American Revolution, the Mayflower Pilgrims and Magna Carta signers. He is survived by his wife, Carol Curtis; his stepchildren, Margaret A. Denny and her husband, Doug Peterson, Raymond H. Denny and Dorothy A. Denny and her husband, Kevin; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.Funeral services were held May 14 from the Park Lawn Funeral Home in Kansas City, Mo. Burial folowed in Memorial Park Cemetery. Wake Robin developers reapply with P&Z

LAKEVILLE — ARADEV LLC, the developer behind the proposed redesign of Wake Robin Inn, returned before Salisbury’s Planning and Zoning Commission at its May 5 regular meeting with a 644-page plan that it says scales back the project.

ARADEV withdrew its previous application last December after a six-round public hearing in which neighbors along Wells Hill Road and Sharon Road rallied against the proposal as detrimental to the neighborhood.

FALLS VILLAGE — Housatonic Valley Regional High School girls lacrosse kept rolling Tuesday, May 6, with a decisive 18-6 win over Lakeview High School.

Eight different players scored for Housatonic in the Northwest Corner rivalry matchup. Sophomore Georgie Clayton led the team with five goals.

Troutbeck Symposium 2025: the latest chapter in continuing a vital legacy

Participating students and teachers gathered for the traditional photo at the 2025 Troutbeck Symposium on Thursday, May 1.

Students and educators from throughout the region converged at Troutbeck in Amenia for a three-day conference to present historical research projects undertaken collaboratively by students with a common focus on original research into their chosen topics. Area independent schools and public schools participated in the conference that extended from Wednesday, April 30 to Friday, May 2.

The symposium continues the Troutbeck legacy as a decades-old gathering place for pioneers in social justice and reform. Today it is a destination luxury country inn, but Troutbeck remains conscious of its significant place in history.
