Anthony R. ‘Tony’ Gandolfo

EAST CANAAN — Anthony R. “Tony” Gandolfo, 88, died Aug. 30, 2015, surrounded by his family, at the Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. 

He was the husband of the late Leatrice “Lea” (Holmes) Gandolfo, who died February 23, 2004. 

Tony was born June 14, 1927, at the former Winsted Hospital, son of the late Marie (Zucco) and Nicholas Gandolfo. He worked for more than 25 years as a store manager for C.A. Lindell’s and Sons in North Canaan. Prior to that, he owned a shoe repair business in North Canaan. 

Tony was a member of the North Canaan Congregational Church in East Canaan. He and his wife devoted much of their free time to the Fishes and Loaves Food Pantry of the North Canaan Congregational Church for many years. 

In his younger years, Tony was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also had a fondness for wild birds and enjoyed making birdhouses for them. 

Tony left high school when his country called, to fight in World War II. He served in the U.S. Navy during his time in the war. After coming home, he became a member of the Couch Pipa VFW Post in North Canaan. 

Tony is survived by his two sons, Andy Gandolfo of North Canaan and Tom Gandolfo of Lakeville; his daughter, Lisa Spadaccini of Falls Village; a granddaughter, Tanya Brown of North Canaan; and two great-grandchildren, Aaron and Giavanna. 

Funeral services were held Sept. 2 at the North Canaan Congregational Church in East Canaan, followed by burial with full military honors in Hillside Cemetery in East Canaan. 

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.

Norfolk fire and ambulance crews responded to a one-vehicle crash on Route 272 (Litchfield Road) shortly after 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14.

NORFOLK — A 60-year-old Oregon man is dead after a single-car crash Friday, Nov. 14, according to Connecticut State Police.

Kevin Scott, of Portland, was driving a Ford Escape southbound on Route 272 (Litchfield Road) when he exited the roadway while negotiating a curve and struck a utility pole. The Ford rolled onto its side and the airbags deployed. No other vehicles were involved in the crash and there were no passengers in the car.

WINSTED — Holy Cross High School won 36-20 against the Gilbert/Northwestern/Housatonic co-op football team Saturday, Nov. 15.

The hard-fought contest was won in the air. Holy Cross QB Brady Lombardo completed 16/31 passes for 309 yards with five touchdowns and one interception.

NEWTOWN — Housatonic Valley Regional High School's girls soccer team's state tournament run concluded in the semifinals with a 4-2 loss to Morgan High School Wednesday, Nov. 12.

The final four finish was the deepest playoff push for Housatonic since 2014. Lainey Diorio scored both goals and keeper Vi Salazar logged 10 saves in the semifinal game.
