Bear Claw Coffee House opens

WINSTED — A popular spot for coffee and chatting has changed hands and reopened under a new name. The former Donut Station at 314 Main St. is now the Bear Claw Coffee House, under the ownership and management of Roberto Rodriguez.Rodriguez, who has lived in Winsted for the past seven years, was born in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. His family moved to Watertown when he was 16. The son of a school teacher, Rodriguez served in the U.S. Marines for eight years, primarily stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. After he was discharged from the Marines, he worked at a variety of restaurants from 1988 to 2006, including Wendy’s and McDonald’s in Bridgeport. In 2006, he became the manager for the Winsted McDonald’s, where he worked until 2011.This year, Rodriguez purchased the former Donut Station from John Wey, who had owned the shop for about 10 years.Rodriguez said the café is named after a tasty kind of pastry that is usually served at the café, along with doughnuts and coffee.“I always wanted to own my own business and purchasing the café gave me an opportunity to do that,” Rodriguez said. “This café is a landmark in Winsted. Everyone in town stops by here and talks about politics, families and everything else you can think of.”Rodriguez said he plans to continue to offer Donut Station brand coffee to customers and the usual assortment of doughnuts and Danish pastries. He said he eventually plans to install a bakery in the back of the store where the café will offer homemade muffins, cookies, cakes and apple turnovers.Rodriguez plans to renovate the store, including removing the long counter in front and installing tables.“I plan on doing a few things at a time,” he said. “Other than that, we are keeping the coffee the same as before. We’re here to serve the community.”Bear Claw café is located at 314 Main St. and is open from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week. For more information, call the café at 860-379-2492.

May Castleberry’s next chapter

May Castleberry’s next chapter

May Castleberry at home in Lakeville.

Natalia Zukerman
Castleberry’s idea of happiness is “looking at a great painting.”

May Castleberry is a ball of sunshine and passion, though she grew up an introverted child, moving with her family from Alberta to Colorado to Texas, finding comfort in mountains, books and wide-open skies. Today, the former art book editor and museum curator has found a new home in Lakeville, where the natural beauty of the Northwest Corner continues to captivate her. Whether walking with friends, painting, reading or visiting beloved local libraries in Salisbury, Norfolk and Cornwall, Castleberry has embraced the region since making her move permanent in 2022, bringing with her a remarkable career shaped by a lifelong love of books and art.

Castleberry grew up in the world of books, and especially art books, and she credits her artist mother, an avid art book collector, with igniting her passions. Castleberry’s high school art teacher in Dallas understood how to teach students to channel their imaginations into books and art.

Janet Andre Block is ‘Catching Light’

Artist Janet Andre Block in her studio in Salisbury.

L. Tomaino

What do Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s piano concertos and a quiet room have to do with Janet Andre Block’s work? They are among the many elements that shape how she paints, helping guide her into the layered, luminous worlds she creates on canvas.

Block makes layered oil paintings in rich, deep, misty colors. She developed her technique as an undergraduate at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University and then at New York University, and also time spent in Venice earning a master’s degree in studio art.
