Building boats, testing buoyancy

For the NorthEast-Millerton Library’s latest STEAM Club activity, Lynn Buckley, a former educator from the Webutuck Central School District, invited local youngsters to learn more about buoyancy by building boats on Friday afternoon, Sept. 20. Beginning at 4:30 p.m., the children shaped boats first out of tin foil, then out of clay, and tested the buoyancy of their creations by placing pennies in the center of the boats to see how many pennies it would take for the boats to sink. Each time their boats sank into the tub of water, the children rushed back to the “design board” set up in the children’s section of the library to reconfigure their designs and build better boats.
