Candidates selected at primaries and caucuses

HARLEM VALLEY — Primary and caucus results have been tallied for North East, Amenia, Pine Plains, Washington and Millbrook, as follows:

North East

The Democratic Caucus held on Saturday, Aug. 27 determined which candidates would be backed by the party for the open supervisor and town council positions.

Incumbent Dave Sherman won the Democratic nomination for the town supervisor race, beating John Merwin. Sherman is also endorsed by the Republicans.

Merwin will be running on the independent line, on the North East United Party ticket.

The Republican Primary, held on Tuesday, Sept. 13, chose George Kaye and Charles “Chip” Barrett as the two nominees for the open positions on the town council.

Incumbent Dave McGhee did not receive the Republican nomination but he is running backed by the North East United Party.

Ralph Fedele and Jon Arnason will be running for town council on the Democratic line.

Nancy Davis-Vialpando was endorsed by the Democratic and Independence parties to retian her position of town clerk. There are no Republican candidates.

Incumbent John Crodelle is running for town justice and was backed by both the Democratic and Republican parties.

Amenia

The Republican Primary held on Tuesday, Sept. 13, selected Bill Flood as the party’s nominee for town supervisor over town Councilwoman Victoria Perotti.

Perotti is still in the race for supervisor on the Conservative and Independence tickets.

Flood and Perotti will face the Democratic and Working Families nominee, Janet Reagon.

The primary also nominated Lawrence Moore for town assessor.

Brad Rebillard is running on the Conservative and Independence lines. Incumbent Ron Gazzoli will be running as the Democratic nominee.

Incumbent Norman Cayea, backed by the Republicans and the Conservatives, incumbent Vicki Doyle, backed by the Democrats, and CJ Hoss, backed by the Democrats and the Working Families, will be vying for the two open positions on the Town Board.

Incumbent Maureen Bonds is running uncontested for the position of town clerk. She is the nominee for the Republican and Conservative parties.

Republican Norman Moore is running uncontested to retain his seat as town justice.

Pine Plains

The Pine Plains Republican Party held its caucus on Thursday, Sept. 8. The Pine Plains Democratic Party held its caucus on Friday, Sept. 16.

For town supervisor, the Republicans chose to back Gregg Pulver for re-election.

The Democratic Party selected Brian Coons as its candidate for town supervisor.

Incumbents Robert Couse and George Keeler were nominated by the Republican Party to run for town council. They will go up against Democratic-backed Jim Jackson and Scott Chase for the two open positions on the board.

Assessor Jim Mara and Rich Diaz are running on the Democratic ticket for town assessor. Mara is also backed by the Republican Party.

Judy Harpp is endorsed by the Republican Party. She is running uncontested to retain her position as town clerk.

Incumbent Christi Acker is running uncontested for town justice. She is backed by the both the Democratic and the Republican parties.

Republican-backed Barry Hay is the sole candidate running for the highway superintendent position, which he currently holds.

Washington/Millbrook

During the Washington Republican Caucus, the party selected its candidates for supervisor and town council.

Gary Ciferri beat town Councilman Stan Morse for the Republican nomination for town supervisor. Morse is being endorsed by the Democratic Party.

Albert DeBonis, Robert Audia and Karen Mosca are on the Republican ticket for the open town council seats. They will face Democratic-backed Jeff Giardina in the November general election.

Jim Brownell is running for the town of Washington Highway Superintendent position, Mary Alex is running to retain her seat as town clerk and Elizabeth Shequine is running for town justice. All three are incumbents backed by the Republican Party.

In the Millbrook Democratic Caucus, three candidates were unanimously selected for open positions.

Incumbent Laura Hurley is running for mayor on the Democratic ticket.

Mike Herzog and Thomas Whalen are running for the two open seats on the village board of trustees.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
