A Chance To Look at Some Youthful Art At Youthful Art

This weekend’s “Blue and Gold at the White” show, at The White Gallery in Lakeville, features the work of 45 students from Housatonic Valley Regional High School. Sixty works will be on view in acrylic, watercolor, gouache, and including mixed media, photography, printmaking, monoprints, animation and sculpture. Dropping by teacher Warren Prindle’s advanced painting class the other day, I was struck by the seriousness in the room.Not that the kids weren’t kidding around a bit. But as Prindle gave them their marching orders, the students settled in and got to work with very little fuss. Senior Rachel Richards of South Kent was working on a sketch of a jester, using a photograph of what was supposed to be the town drunk, passed out on a bench at an impossible angle as a model. She needed some help with the drape of the clothing. Prindle sat down, made a couple of suggestions, and the jester project was back in business. Rachel has two photographs and a painting in the White show. She is an old-school photographer, using film and a darkroom — an enthusiasm she picked up from her mother. She said that the satisfaction of making a good black and white print is immense. She said she might apply to art schools, but is more interested in getting a degree in anthropology. “I’d like to double major.” “The Blue and Gold at The White” opens with a reception May 13, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.The exhibit runs runs through May 15, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proceeds benefit the artists and the HVRHS art program.
