Colebrook students read and swim at local pond

COLEBROOK — Colebrook Consolidated School students recently received a special back-to-school treat with an afternoon visit to nearby Colebrook Pond for a late summer swim and read.

The trip, which took place last Friday, Sept. 4, was a reward for those who completed all of the books included on their summer reading list.

“We always have a summer reading incentive, Vikki Pac, the elementary school’s language arts coordinator, said at the pond last week.

Each year, the students work with Pac to develop their own, individualized  reading lists. The lists are generally made up of three chapter books.

“The kids are choosing things that they want to read, Pac said, making it more likely they will stick to and complete the program.

After school starts, each student’s list is reviewed. If all of the books are checked as completed, the girl or boy will be included in that year’s reward.

Last year, students received a special poster that honored their literary accomplishment.

“But we decided to change it this year and offer up a ‘read-in’ at the pond, Pac said.

And the incentive appears to have been a success, with more than 96 percent of the school’s students reading all of the books on their lists this summer.

“And what a great day to be outside reading, she said.
