A day on the field equals a day of fun, at Webutuck Track and Field Day

WEBUTUCK — After experiencing a week with several thunderstorms and some intermittent heavy rain, Webutuck schools were blessed with sunny skies — and cooler temperatures — for their annual Track and Field Day event.

The middle school held its field day on Tuesday, June 7, led by middle/high school physical education teacher Kathleen Howard, while the elementary school held its field day on Friday, June 10, under the supervision of physical education teacher Rosanne Persico.

Field day is one of the most anticipated end-of-year events by the younger students, according to Persico.

“It is one of the best days of the year for the kids,” she said.

The day is packed with fun as students participate in outdoor track and field events such as relays and races, soccer, tug of war and more, while teachers, parents and friends sit on the sidelines cheering.

But while students may only think of the fun, some may not realize it is more than that, as “it incorporates physical education into it,” Persico said.

“It is a good way to promote health and sportsmanship,” she added.

Throughout the years the event has grown, offering more than just track and field events.

Now the day gets split up in two parts. The first half of the day, children participate in the traditional field day events (relays, 50-yard dash, etc.), and after lunch they participate in party games such as cornhole toss and horseshoe toss.

But the “most fun” addition has been bouncy castles, according to third-grader Tanner Coons.

This year, participants also enjoyed snow cones, prepared by Kieran McEnroe with crushed ice donated by the Amenia Fire Company.

Before the truly hyperborean conditions of Saturday and Sunday set in, Friday night brought the crowds – enough that both the vast SWSA parking lot, and overflow, were completely full by 6:45 p.m.
