Eleanor Louise Dyer

NEW HARTFORD â€” Eleanor “Ellie†Louise (Root) Dyer, 65, died April 25, 2009, at her home, surrounded by her family, after a battle with lung cancer.

Mrs. Dyer lived in New Hartford with her husband of 47 years, Richard Carl Dyer, where they would spend afternoons watching the wildlife that frequently visited their yard.

Mrs. Dyer lived and worked in Berlin/Kensington for most of her life before moving to New Hartford 10 years ago. She retired from Atofina (Arkema) in Kensington, where she worked in the shipping office for many years and made many friends.

In addition to her husband, she leaves behind her three daughters, June Wasel and her husband, Erik Wasel, of New Hartford, Tori Bilello and her husband, Leo Bilello, of Terryville, and Katie Preston and her husband, Josef Preston, of Winsted; her grandchildren, Meagan and Ryan Wasel, Austin, Rylee and Sebastian Bilello and Gavin and Amo Preston; and four sisters, Jackie Pechout of New Britain, Rose Davis of New Britain, Betty Witkowski of  Burlington and Rita Malone of Lantana, Fla. She was predeceased by two brothers, Sherman and Wesley Root; and a granddaughter, Nikole.

On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead: El Día de los Muertos.

Mexican Day of the Dead takes place the first weekend of November and honors los difuntos (the deceased) with ofrendas (offerings) on an altar featuring photos of loved ones who have passed on. Elements of earth, wind, fire and water are represented with food, papel picada (colorful decorative paper), candles and tequila left for the beloved deceased. The departed are believed to travel from the spirit world and briefly join the living for a night of remembrance and revelry.
