Extended sewer could cost 4k to 5k per house

NORTH CANAAN — Anthony Nania, warden of the Canaan Fire District, confirmed last week that an extension of the sewer line, from Geer to the town line on Route 7 South, could be underway very soon. A combination of state and federal funding is sought, and receipt of those funds will determine the time frame. Total costs are expected to be as high as $1.7 million.

Property owners in the expanded portion of the district will be assessed an amount based on how much funding is received. Nania said preliminary estimates put the assessment at $4,000 to $5,000 per house.

The fire district is a separate taxing district within North Canaan. It is defined by the areas served by sewer service, primarily the north and west portions of town and the central business zone and neighborhoods. It operates the sewage treatment plant, some hydrants and streetlights, and installs and maintains sidewalks in the center of town.

Property owners within the sewer district pay an annual tax. Those connected to the sewer also pay a usage fee.

At the district’s March 6 meeting, the following slate of officers was elected:warden, Anthony Nania; clerk, John Foley; treasurer, John Foley; tax collector, Jennifer Jacquier; Board of Tax review, Ned Gow; executive committee, John Foley and Mario DiGiacomo. Nania announced that this marks his 30th year as warden. "I think that’s enough," he added.

While he did not elaborate further last week about his plans, Nania and Geer Corporation, of which he was president for 17 years, parted ways in December. He divulged then that he was looking for a similar job in a warmer climate.
