Free Health Screenings and More at HealthWise March 10

LAKEVILLE — The fifth annual HealthWise free family community health fair will be held Saturday, March 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Hotchkiss School. More than 35 free screenings, medical consultations and interactive health services will be offered.

HealthWise is presented by Noble Horizons and Sharon Hospital.

The Sharon Hospital blood lab will offer free blood tests (cholesterol, PSA, and glucose — please fast prior to test), which help to screen for heart disease, diabetes, and prostate health. Health professionals will be on site to interpret results.

Anita Kelsey, a cardiologist at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford and director of the Women’s Heart Program at the Hoffman Heart and Vascular Institute, will bring the Women’s Heart Program to HealthWise this year. Kelsey and her team will provide cardiac risk assessments for women, as well as nutritional counseling, exercise guidelines and specific recommendations for lifestyle modifications.

Dentist Elizabeth Dekker will perform dental and oral health screenings. Podiatrist Andrew Schwartz will offer foot checks, and Dr. Douglas Finch of Sharon Hospital will meet privately with HealthWise visitors to answer medical questions.

Free bone density tests will screen for bone loss. Ophthalmologist Walter Donnelley will provide glaucoma and vision testing, and a full hearing assessment with certified audiologist Glen Datres will be available.

Mental agility tests, depression screenings, AIDS tests, breathing and blood-pressure checks, chiropractic evaluations and body fat analysis will be available as well.

Complementing the screenings are a host of wellness and life enhancement activities, including "Fitness on the Cheap and On the Go," nutritional counseling, coupons for free nutritional food products, reiki, massage, reflexology and sessions with physical rehab professionals.

In addition, there will be information on food stamps, Medicare Part D, and Connecticut’s 211 Info Hotline.

For children, there will be a magic show, juggling, clown antics, Scrubby the Bear, games and more.

Spanish interpreters will be available. For more information, or directions, call 800-666-6855 (en espanol tambien).

A cold, blustery wind shook the limbs of an ancient apple tree still clinging to golden fruit. Spitting sleet drove us inside for warmth, and the lusty smells of manure from the goats, sheep, pigs and chickens in the Stone Round Barn filled our senses. We traveled back in time down sparse hallways lined with endless peg racks. The winter light was slightly crooked through the panes of old glass. The quiet life of the Shakers is preserved simply.
