George Fessenden Miner

LAKEVILLE — George Fessenden Miner, 81, died March 3, 2013, at his home as per his request. He was the husband, for 47 years, of the late Martha Mae (Bergenty) Miner.Mr. Miner was born Aug. 13, 1931, in Sharon, the son of Dorothy (Perkins) and Harold Chapin Miner. He graduated from Housatonic Valley Regional High School in 1949. He served in the U.S. Army Ready Reserve during the Korean War and was assigned to the 337th Field Artillery Division from May 1950 to May 22, 1953. He received an honorable discharge.He married Martha Mae Bergenty in 1954 and built his home on Salmon Kill Road in Lakeville in 1955. Mr. Miner then embarked on a career as a lead lineman with Northeast Utilities/Connecticut Light and Power until retirement. In 2003, he moved to Newport, N.Y., to be close to his family.Mr. Miner was an avid outdoors man, an accomplished hunter, fisherman and professional trapper who often trapped for the state of Connecticut. He held a private pilot license. He modeled in Esquire as a downhill skier, was on the cover of an international health-care book, was in Road and Track magazine and also modeled with his daughter, Gail, for Equitable Life Insurance in Look and Life magazines. He was a downhill skier and ski jumper, jumping competitively at Salisbury and at Bear Mountain, N.Y., Lake Placid, N.Y., Brattleboro, Vt., Middlebury, Vt., Greenfield, Mass., Dartmouth, N.H., Berlin, N.H., Rumford, Maine, and Quebec, Canada. Mr. Miner was a founding director of the Salisbury Winter Sports Association, of which he had been a member since 1945. An active director, he was elected as an honorary lifelong director.In 1957, he was elected town constable for the town of Salisbury; he served for 32 years. He also served as head of security for one year and worked for 12 years at Lime Rock Park. Mr. Miner received several commendations from the Connecticut State Police, as well as a commendation from Hartford Electric Light Co. for saving the lives of two young boys, at the risk of his own life, from floodwaters on the Housatonic River near the Northeast Utility power generation plant.Mr. Miner was a member of Montgomery Masonic Lodge 13 in Lakeville from 1973.Mr. Miner is survived by his son, David G. Miner, of Salisbury; his daughter, Gail S. (Miner) Fischer of Newport; his brother, Donald Miner of Dallas, Ore.; his sister, Ruth (Miner) Belter, of Lakeville; and two granddaughters, Stefanie D. Fischer and Victoria K. Fischer, both of Newport.A memorial luncheon will be held at Main Street Ristoranté in Newport on Saturday, March 30, from 1 to 3 p.m. A memorial service will also be held on Saturday, April 6, at 2 p.m. at Salisbury Congregational Church, with a reception to follow. Burial will be private. With the recent death of George Phillips at 100, locals are remembering the Edgewood Restaurant, the Amenia supper club he and his wife, Anne Phillips, owned and operated together for more than two decades.

At the Edgewood, there were Delmonico steaks George carved in the basement, lobster tails from an infrared cooker, local trout from the stream outside the door, and a folded paper cup of butter, with heaping bowls of family-style potatoes and vegetables, plus a shot glass of crème de menthe to calm the stomach when the modest check arrived after dessert.

Falls Village exhibit honors life and work of Priscilla Belcher

Hunt Library in Falls Village will present a commemorative show of paintings and etchings by the late Priscilla Belcher of Falls Village.

Priscilla Belcher, a Canaan resident who was known for her community involvement and willingness to speak out, will be featured in a posthumous exhibition at the ArtWall at the Hunt Library from April 25 through May 15.

An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on April 25. The show will commemorate her life and work and will include watercolors and etchings. Belcher died in November 2025 at the age of 95.
