Gilbert and Northwestern Advance


 

The Gilbert boys basketball team pulled away in the second half to defeat Wamogo, 65-44, Monday, Feb. 25, at the Gilbert gym in Winsted in the first round of the Berkshire League Tournament.

The Jackets were led by senior Raul Diaz, who scored a game-high 18 points along with 11 rebounds. Diaz got plenty of support from teammates Adam Vaccari, Jim Bunel and Zac Tuozzo. Vaccari was especially hot from outside the arc, connecting for five three-pointers and finishing with 17 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Bunel also tallied 17 points on the night and added eight rebounds and six assists. Tuozzo corralled a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with eight points and five assists.

With the victory, the No. 2-seeded Jackets advance to the semi-finals on Wednesday to play No. 3 seed Terryville at Thomaston High School in Thomaston.


Laudati carries Highlanders

Past Lewis Mills, 71-68 (OT)


Junior Chris Laudati scored a career high 41 points to lead Northwestern past Lewis Mills in overtime Monday, Feb. 25, in Burlington, in the first round of the Berkshire League Tournament.

The Highlanders overcame a six-point deficit, 56-50, by outscoring the Spartans by a 15-9 count in the fourth period to force the overtime.

Laudati, who scored 37 of his points in regulation, scored four of his team’s six points in the extra session to seal the victory for the Highlanders. Josh Seibold and Bobby Lippincott each added eight points for Northwestern.

With the victory, the No. 5-seeded Highlanders advance to Wednesday’s semi-finals against top-seeded Litchfield at Thomaston High School in Thomaston.

CORNWALL — Nearly 245 years a er he purchased his freedom, Robin Starr — a formerly enslaved Revolutionary War veteran— was officially recognized last week when the Town of Cornwall proclaimed Feb. 8 as Robin Starr Day.

Starr, who served in the Revolutionary War, is the subject of a research project undertaken by the7th-grade class of Cornwall Consolidated School. He was a veteran of many battles, including the Battle of Stony Point and the Battle of Yorktown, and he was a recipient of the Badge of Military Merit (an early version of the Purple Heart).

Salisbury celebrates 100th Jumpfest

SALISBURY — Salisbury Winter Sports Association kicked off its centennial celebration Friday evening, Feb. 6, in classic festive style as temperate weather – alongside roaring bonfires and ample libations – kept Jumpfest-goers comfy as skiers flew, fireworks boomed and human dog sledders, well, did what human dog sledders do.

Before the truly hyperborean conditions of Saturday and Sunday set in, Friday night brought the crowds – enough that both the vast SWSA parking lot, and overflow, were completely full by 6:45 p.m.

Salisbury ski jumpers put on show for students

SALISBURY - With the Winter Olympics just weeks away, Olympic dreams felt a little closer to home for Salisbury Central School students on Feb. 4, when student ski jumpers from the Salisbury Winter Sports Association put on a live demonstration at the Satre Hill Ski Jumping Complex for more than 300 classmates and teachers.

With screams of delight, student-athletes soared through the air, showcasing years of training and focus for an audience of their peers. The atmosphere was electric as the jumpers soaked up the attention like local celebrities.
