Gilbert rally not enough; Terryville wins 10-9

WINSTED — Gilbert baseball hosted the Terryville Kangaroos at Walker Field Monday, April 12. Despite battling out of an early deficit, the Jackets took a narrow 10-9 loss at home.

Gilbert found themselves in an ugly spot at the top of the first, giving up three infield singles and a run off a series of errors and juggled opportunities. Kangaroo Kerrick Lee sent a long, high shot into the outfield to drive in two additional runs. A Jacket fumble at the plate allowed the Kangaroos to collect four quick runs in the first inning.

Unable to mount any early offense of their own, the Jackets were forced to return to the field to attempt to halt Terryville. The second inning was not a fully merciful one for Gilbert, as further errors allowed the Kangaroos to extend their lead to five heading into the bottom of the second.

Terryville walked Gilbert’s Tyler Grant and an error of their own allowed him to comfortably steal second. Consecutive strikeouts seemed to have the Kangaroos ready to close out the inning until Jacket Austin Brochu sent a shot deep into the outfield, allowing Grant to score and putting the Jackets on the scoreboard.

The Kangaroos increased their lead to 7-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth, seemingly firmly in command and ready to chalk up the win — until Gilbert responded in a big way. The Jackets rallied and took the lead in a five-run inning. The tie-breaking run came off an RBI single from Devon Kulinksi.

The Kangaroos refused to surrender quietly and reclaimed the lead off a two-run double from Todd Schauss. Gilbert took the 10-9 defeat and falls to a season record of 1-2.

The Jackets play their next game at Wamogo Friday, April 16, at 1 p.m.
