Girls' soccer postseason ends, volleyball begins

WEBUTUCK — It’s been a tumultuous season for the girls varsity soccer program. Webutuck lost 3-2 in double overtime against Millbrook in the semifinals of the sectional playoffs on Tuesday, Oct. 28, played at Arlington High School.

“We played under the lights, coach Mark Moren said, “It was a little cold but still was a great setting for the game.

Webutuck had a 2-0 lead going into the second half, after goals by graduating seniors and co-captains Keely McCaffrey (assisted by freshman Brook Dahoney) and Lauren Trotter.

“We had a couple good chances in the second half, Moren commented. “The girls played well, but we just couldn’t get the third goal to take the air out of [Millbrook’s] sails.

Webutuck went into the postseason as the fourth seed, while Millbrook held top rankings.

No matter what, Moren said he was “proud of the girls tonight. We did a lot of work this year to get us here.

The girls conclude the season with a overall record of 7-10-1. Nine seniors are graduating.

But just as girls soccer is finishing, the volleyball team’s just getting started.

On Oct. 14 the Warriors beat Coleman Catholic to win the Section IX ‘Class D’ Championship. Coleman is the only other team in ‘Class D,’ and Webutuck won both regular season games. The team will be receiving a plaque and awards next week.

As Webutuck’s Athletic Director Mike Riddle explained via e-mail, there will be no Regional Semi-Finals because Section IX drew a bye.  They will be facing the winner from Section IV and I. Therefore Webutuck will automatically be playing in the regional finals next Sunday, Nov. 9, at 5 p.m. at SUNY New Paltz. They will be facing Candor High School. The Athletic Department will be sending a spectator bus for all students who are interested in supporting the team.

“I am very pleased with the discipline and fundamentals of the game [Coach Jennifer Brandt] brought this season, said Riddle, offering his congratulations to the Lady Warriors.

“I’m proud of the girls, said Brandt during a team practice on Monday. “We’ve come a long way. It’s still a rebuilding year, but we’ve improved a lot since the beginning.

This is Brandt’s first year coaching. She works part-time for the Millerton Police Department. It’s been 11 years since Pine Plains sent a volleyball team to the regionals.

“We’re half excited, half nervous, Brandt admitted. “But we’ve had fun this year, and with six seniors graduating this year, I’m looking forward to seeing some of our younger players really step it up next year.
