Highland Games at LRP June 25-26

SALISBURY — The Northwest Corner will get its own chance to celebrate a thousand-year-old tradition this weekend at Lime Rock Park. The Round Hill Highland Games, now in their 92nd year, will be held on June 25 and 26 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

According to the Round Hill Highland Games website at www.roundhill.org, the tradition dates back to King Malcolm III, of Scotland who established the games in the 11th century “in order to sort out the most nimble, accurate, agile and coordinated Cumbrians with the most prowess, endurance, stamina and character.”

Scottish or not, all are invited to the games at Lime Rock Park, which will include traditional dancing, hammer throwing and a heavyweight competition.

In addition to the competition Scots (and Scots-at-heart) can enjoy traditional music and “fabulous Scottish food and drink.”

Children will have the opportunity to compete in their own athletic competition and have their photo taken as both a beheaded Queen of Scotland, or Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster.

Tickets are $15 and are available online as well as on the day of the games at Lime Rock. The games will take place rain or shine.
