Housatonic student of the week

The Lakeville Journal congratulates the honorees of the student of the week program at Housatonic Valley Regional High School. FALLS VILLAGE — The songs of birds resound over the hills these days, whether it’s the chirping of a sparrow, the rat-a-tat-tat of a pileated woodpecker, or the resonant screech of a red-tailed hawk. Beautiful and multilingual, these individual harmonies contribute to the symphony of nature that makes this area remarkable.Similarly, our students produce a joyous noise in their choral and instrumental groups. Genevieve Terrall, this week’s student of the week, is a member of Housatonic’s Sweethearts group, an a cappella chorus that pairs with our male Heartbreakers group and the jazz choir for the Spring Concert at the beginning of June. You may also hear the sharp solo of her trumpet, which she has played since the fourth grade.Like a migratory bird, Genevieve studies the world. She takes both Spanish 5 and French 1, and she speaks passionately of the American Field Study (AFS) program, which she believes should be a requirement for all students. In addition to their recent Hunger Banquet, the group has tackled global issues such as the AIDS pandemic and the disasters in Asia.Although she loves her hometown of Cornwall, Genevieve is looking forward to “flying the coop” next year, when she hopes to attend a school that offers a study abroad program. Since she visited Tecate, Mexico, during the summer before her freshman year, Genevieve has been passionate about volunteering outside of our country’s borders. Ultimately, however, she acknowledges that she will come home to roost in the northwest hills, all the more worldly and wise for her travels.
