HVRHS students taste their way through Germany

FALLS VILLAGE — Last October, for the second time, Housatonic Valley Regional High School students welcomed high school students from the Kaiser-Friedrich-Ufer Gymnasium in Hamburg, Germany, to our school.

Our partners lived with us for just over two weeks, and last month, in April, we made the return trip for two weeks, living as German students.

The itinerary consisted of a few days in school; multiple day trips and tours including Hamburg, Luebeck and Travemuende, and the Neuengamme concentration camp; and an overnight in Berlin.

Next to the tours, the highlight was the food. Our students ate their way through Germany enjoying foods like currywurst, bread, cheeses, butter, more bread, Haribo gummy candies, doners and even more bread.

Although homesick at first, most of our students cannot wait to travel back to visit their host families or welcome their partners back into their homes.

The chaperones this year included Alan Lovejoy and Amanda Langan and myself.

The student participants were Roger Cowgill, Anna Geyselaers, Karl Grannan, Larry Grannan, Efram Hermes, Taylor Hurley, Zoe Lorette, Garett MacLaren, Hannah McGuire, Emily O’Connor, Alex Tripodi, Johannah Whittelsey and Ally Winans.

The art of Marilyn Hock

Waterlily (8”x12”) made by Marilyn Hock

It takes a lot of courage to share your art for the first time and Marilyn Hock is taking that leap with her debut exhibition at Sharon Town Hall on Sept. 12. A realist painter with a deep love for wildlife, florals, and landscapes, Hock has spent the past few years immersed in watercolor, teaching herself, failing forward, and returning again and again to the page. This 18-piece collection is a testament to courage, practice and a genuine love for the craft.

“I always start with the eyes,” said Hock of her animal portraits. “That’s where the soul lives.” This attentiveness runs through her work, each piece rendered with care, clarity, and a respect for the subtle variations of color and light in the natural world.
