Incumbents run in village elections

MILLERTON — Come Tuesday, March 16, Democrats and Republicans alike can vote for their parties’ nominees when they cast their ballots for village trustees. Incumbents Debbie Middlebrook and Yosh Schulman were cross-endorsed by both parties at the Jan. 25 caucuses.

Both Democrats, Middlebrook and Schulman are seeking re-election to the two two-year terms on the Village Board.

Middlebrook is seeking her second term while Schulman is seeking his second full term (he was appointed to fill out a half-term when John Scutieri became mayor and his seat then opened up; Schulman also served one full term when elected at the polls two years ago).

“Two years is not long enough to have a clear understanding of what needs to be done and how to do that, Middlebrook said, explaining, in part, why she’s anxious to return to the position.

Middlebrook said her goal is to see progress made on infrastructure improvements in Millerton, including improved sidewalks and a decision about a sewer system.

Schulman also has a list of priorities. At its top is keeping the village on budget and state-of-the-art.

“I’m focusing on bringing cost savings to our area through energy efficiencies and actively pursuing grants to save money, he said. “I’m keeping the village up-to-date as far as laws and technology and making sure we keep a forward looking view on where we’re going as new developments and opportunities come our way.

Village elections are Tuesday, March 16, from noon until 9 p.m., at the Nutrition Site on Simmons Street (adjacent to the Village Hall). As always, registered voters are urged to participate in the voting process.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

As the chilly breeze settles in, Halloween approaches and the community yearns for spooky festivities — HVRHS has answered that calling. An event held annually for the past eight years, the HVRHS haunted house has returned.

The event is organized by the current senior and junior year classes — 2026 and 2027 respectively — and held to raise money that goes toward the junior and senior class’s activities such as senior week, prom, the senior class trip, and more.
